////CERN - Large Hadron Collider goes live. ////
First beam in the LHC - accelerating science
A historic moment in the CERN Control Centre: the beam was successfully steered around the accelerator.
Geneva, 10 September 2008. The first beam in the Large Hadron Collider at CERN1 was successfully steered around the full 27 kilometres of the world’s most powerful particle accelerator at 10h28 this morning. This historic event marks a key moment in the transition from over two decades of preparation to a new era of scientific discovery.
“It’s a fantastic moment,” said LHC project leader Lyn Evans, “we can now look forward to a new era of understanding about the origins and evolution of the universe.”

////Republican National Convention // Protests ////
I had live updates from a friend watching the protests in the twin cities durring the begining of the Republican National Convention yesterday. I heard ambulances and helicopters over the phone, and was told of horses trampling one protestor. My source eventually had to turn back due to teargas. Many news crews where there, "surprisingly" nothing came across any of the news networks, via tv or online. Democracy Now! did however have great coverage of the event, and also had its producer and a few other crew members arrested.
Democracy Now! on Republican National Convention and protests.
AMY GOODMAN: As we interviewed Jon Stewart at the Minneapolis airport next to baggage claim, we got a text message that Democracy Now! videographer, filmmaker Elizabeth Press, who had arrived before us, had been arrested, or she had been detained, or she was in a house with I-Witness Video, and somehow the group was surrounded by police. That was the last details we had. We had the address of the place; they were texted to us. And we raced off.Armed groups of police in the Twin Cities have raided more than a half-a-dozen locations since Friday night in a series of preemptive raids before the Republican convention. The coordinated searches were led by Ramsey County Sheriff Bob Fletcher but conducted in coordination with federal agencies.
